SAMI KUKKA - Menen Veteen »
Menen veteen (Going into the Water), is Finnish folk artist Sami Kukka's fourth album, produced by the percussionist and electronic musician Samuli Kosminen (Múm).
Sami Kukka's music has a strong sense of authenticity that one could describe as tenderness, effortlessness, humbleness and tranquility. His musical style has been compared to Nick Drake and Pekka Streng. The album's organic, acoustic soundscape is deeply enjoyable with breathing, vibrating and imaginative arrangements. Kukka's fingerpicking-style acoustic guitar playing carries the songs forward but around it revolve a vast range of changing instruments from Finnish traditional instruments jouhikko and kantele to dobro, psaltery, glockenspiel and other percussive instruments. Musicians include the highly acclaimed Finnish classical music violinist Pekka Kuusisto and Ólöf Arnalds of Múm.
Kukka's lyrics on this album have a lot references to nature, to the rain, apple trees and snow. His use of mundane, everyday imagery as he contemplates on feelings of intimacy, loneliness and growth create a sense of beauty. You can feel Kukka's deeply personal involvement in his delivery of the songs. The end result has a very calming and thought provoking effect.
