The debut 12" from Finnish duo hannulelauri!
While it may be a new name to many, hannulelauri has a solid dance music pedigree dating back to the halcyon days of Acid House's first surge of popularity in Helsinki in the late 80's, where DJ Ender (aka Hannu) was one of the first DJ's in Finland championing the sound. Ender's long musical history has led him many places including deep club collaborations with Pepe Deluxé and as co-founder of jazz-dance collective Nuspirit Helsinki. Joining up with new jack Lauri Soini, the two have forged ahead as hannulelauri, embracing 80's style, italo disco and spaced-out rock grooves, giving it their own Finnish twist for 2009.
First up is "Glittering Night", conjuring visions of 8-bit videogame soundtracks applied to the dancefloor, or an alternative theme to the movie Robocop (which Lauri seems to have a strong affinity for), with shimmering electric synth chords washing over a Commodore 64 groove before a Peter Hook soundalike drops a lovely bassline, making New Order comparisons inevitable (a good thing!). Perfect late-night machine funk.
Next is "Sally 2000", a more introspective piece with insistent digital strings providing the foundation for a childlike toy chime melody, pulsating bass and more as layer upon layer builds to a fuzzed-out, pixelated yet beatless climax. Finally, the late-night vibe continues as "Sally 2000" gets a version from Finland's techno/house master Jori Hulkkonen (needing no introduction nor explanation) who works the track's pleading strings into a more dancefloor-friendly mix, adding perfectly tuned drums and a nice, fat kick but keeping the synth melodies intact and the tempo slower than your normal electrohouse jam.

About DJ Ender
Hannu Nieminen aka DJ Ender started DJ'ing in the late eighties when the first wave of Acid House hit Finland. In a classic DIY spirit he quickly took to organizing warehouse-parties.
“Those were 100 percent chaotic experiences. We lacked proper equipment and knowledge of what this new electronic music was really all about. Nevertheless we managed to pull things off somehow, mostly due to our enthusiasm rather than skill, I must say.”
Few years later legendary Club Deep followed, setting standards for the evolving club scene. Ever since their names has stood for quality among the groove aficionados in Finland.
Although Ender primarily considers himself a DJ he has managed to come a long way as a producer as well. Teaming up with Marko L. he founded Function Recordings in 1995 that would serve as an alternative forum for Finnish instrumental electronic music.
In 1998 Nuspirit Helsinki, an unorthodox collective of musicians and DJs, masterminded by Ender and Tuomas K, was formed. Since it's first release on Guidance-label it has successfully sought new musical frontiers in the forefront of the nu-jazz scene.
Lately, besides his remixes for labels such as Perfect Toy and Nuevo Ritmo, Ender has found time to experiment with new material as well. On this project, titled hannulelauri he is teaming-up with his dj colleague, Lauri Soini. So far they have done few successful festival and club gigs in Finland. First hannulelauri releases can be expected to see daylight in the near future.
About DJ Lauri Soini
Lauri Soini has a creative and musical background. Although at the same time when his mother wanted him to take violin lessons, he was more interested in computers. Meanwhile he also managed to study in an art school.
“When dad was listening his Stevie Wonder records, I bet he didn’t expect to see me playing the very same vinyl years after in a club to young people”.
The real passion for electronic music hit Lauri in the year 1990 when he heard house mixes for the first time.
“Those new sounds took me quickly into different electronic styles from deep to more intense stuff. Thanks to Gilles Peterson’s “A Thing Called Jazz” –radio program back then I became also familiar with all kinds of fresh music influenced strongly by jazz and soul.”
Somewhere in the mid-nineties Lauri started to produce his own material and also began Dj’ing more seriously. At that time his selection included mainly techno, but also deep house records.
“Chain Reaction and Maurizio -style techno had a great impact on me then and they still inspire me a lot.”
Since then Lauri has been playing records at various events all around. Apart from DJ’ing you could find his DJ-sets and tracks being played by national radio stations. Recently Lauri did come up with a few very appreciated solo live performances. Lauri has also compiled and arranged soundtracks for fashion events.
Lauri's musical style as a DJ can be shortly described as deep dance music with influences from everything. He did gain some respect with house mixes before, but shortly after 2002 he moved more into jazz and bossa –material that turned out to be very refreshing change for dance floors.
“Besides my eclectic musical style, places where I like to perform vary from cozy lounge rooms and clubs to trashy bars and sometimes quite heavy underground events and outdoor festivals.”
Currently Lauri spends his time collecting records and performing in various locations besides working in the studio and having busy time in a day job.
“As a DJ my personal challenge, which sometimes might seem never ending, is to surprisingly dig out all good records in the world.”
About hannulelauri
Their co-operation took off with a remix job originally meant for Nuspirit Helsinki which they couldn’t finish properly.
“It seemed that we always would end up doing something completely different: much dub influenced techno or deep house beats.”
“A turning point for us was our live session in June in Koneisto Festival, where I (Lauri) had been originally signed to perform solo. Somehow I suggested that we should perform our unfinished tracks in few weeks to live audience, which turned out to be just what we needed, a hurried deadline…”
At the moment DJ Ender and Lauri Soini are also working on various other projects including some disco edits and remixes. Lauri is also looking carefully for the right channel to get his own material out.
